February is canine and feline dental awareness month. Did you know that according to recent studies show that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats by 3 years old have some sort of dental disease. Stinky breath is only one sign of dental disease, but so are inflamed, irritated, and red gums. Pawing at the face and mouth, loose and missing teeth, loss of appetite are also signs of possible dental disease. Not all dental diseases is easily seen, and some can only be diagnosed while an animal is under sedation and with oral radiographs. Dental disease can be deadly. Bacteria that accumulates in the animals mouth can travel into the blood stream. Once it is in the blood stream, bacteria can then travel to the major organs such as the kidneys, liver, heart, and lungs and cause infections and if goes untreated organ failure which can result in death.
